The Black Hills of South Dakota were named by the Sioux for the thick pine forests which looked black when seen from the Plains. Gold was discovered during an expedition of the area which lead to what is know as the last great gold rush of the western frontier. Therefore goldsmiths traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
In the middle of the 1870’s, Henry Le Beau a French gold smith found himself lost in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He fell asleep thinking that he would die of starvation or thirst. While asleep he dreamed of a mountain stream with grapevines growing on the banks. He did in fact wake up and started walking, low and behold just as in his dream he came across a mountain stream with grapevines growing on the banks. The shape of those grapevines led to the design of Black Hills Gold Jewelry.
Henry Le Beau and his apprentice S.T. Butler opened the first Black Hills Gold company in 1878 and later divided into two corporations which were the Black Hills Gold Jewelry Manufacturing Company and the F.L. Thorpe Company. Today there are many Black Hills Gold Manufacturers in this region. Most people believe this is a certain type of gold when in fact it refers to the grape leaves, clusters and grapevines. To create the different colors in the jewelry, silver and copper are added to the yellow gold. To get the green color silver is added to the yellow gold and copper is added to the yellow gold to get the rose and pink colors.
There are many steps in the process of making this Jewelry. The gold, silver and copper are melted and shaped into bars. They are then rolled into different thicknesses according to the type of jewelry being made and stamped into these bars are the patterns and dies. The base of the jewelry is cast from other gold bars. There is more to Black Hills Gold jewelry than just a name. It is a unique form of art that remains to this day a popular jewelry. All the jewelry is inspected several times and is high in quality and beauty.
Black Hills Gold must be manufactured in this region by the ruling of a federal judge in the 1980’s. The gold itself does not have to come from theBlack Hills. The design and concept of the jewelry has changed very little over the years, and continues to be a leader in the industry.
